Tips for Making the Most of Your Volunteer Experience

You have a unique opportunity to make a positive impact on your community with volunteering and this will allow you to develop new skills and meet likeminded people. You may be new to volunteering or you may be a seasoned volunteer, but it can be rewarding to maximise your volunteer experience.

You have to take some time to set clear objectives to

What you want to achieve through volunteering. You may be looking to develop new skills or to gain experience in a certain field. For example, if you are already in the field of teaching or looking to become a teacher, you can gain experience through volunteering. Some people will look for volunteer opportunities so that they can give back to the community. You have to understand your motivations; why you are choosing to volunteer and what you hope to gain from it. You have to clarify your expectations with the volunteer organisation as well. You can find Tanzania hostels with volunteer opportunities. You will be able to stay there and engage in volunteering as well. By having a good idea of what you expect from volunteering and what the volunteering agency or organisation expects from you, you will both be able to start on the same page. You will have a clear idea of your responsibilities and the time commitment they expect from you.

Not every volunteering opportunity will be right for you.

You need to look for roles that suit your skills and interests. An important factor to consider is your availability. You have to think realistically about the amount of time you can commit. You can research different volunteer organisations to find a mission that you will love. You can choose an area that you are passionate about whether that is teaching, environmental conservation, medicine etc. so that you can easily stay engaged and motivated. You need to check the location of the opportunity and its flexibility to see how well this fits into your existing lifestyle and commitments.

You have to treat

The volunteer role with the same professionalism as you would a paid position. This means, arriving at the place on time and dressing appropriately along with contributing wholeheartedly to the course from day one. You have to be prepared and this essentially shows your respect to the volunteer organisation as well as the people that you will be serving. So you have to be familiar with the mission, policies and values of the volunteer organisation. Effective communication is very important when you are a volunteer. You need to have an open line of communication with team members and the volunteer coordinator. If there is something that you are unsure about, you have to ask questions. You have to be receptive to the feedback you get as well. Remember to be open-minded when you are volunteering as you will need to adapt to different situations. You may be exposed to a new culture or traditions in a new community and this is an opportunity for you to learn and grow.
